Observations and Descriptions

Observations
Weird sunken rock near SE corner with a dip in the layer filled with soil more similar to SU 17113 (tile and mortar inclusions). Slight slope goes down from west to east. Same as chocolate layers 17100, 17104, and 17117 (to west of wall 17002), as well as chocolate found in Areas 10000, 14000, 15000, 16000.

Note that wall 17012 has no clear foundation. The wall sits on top of the chocolate layer (17114), and was built with mortar and packed clay soil.

2017-07-22 Marzuolo Archaeologist

Either deliberate foundation fill or alluvial deposit below the floor layer. Pollen analysis from chocolate layer excavated in MZ2016 lends support that deposition was anthropic. The hypothesized cut for 17119 (foundation of wall 17002) cuts into the chocolate layer; foundation for wall 17012 appears to be added later and is above chocolate layer.
