Interpretations

Interpretations
2019-06-20 Rhodora Vennarucci

Most likely the reason this context appears to abut 20019 in NE corner is because the later rebuild of that wall cut into the Roman period collapse layers, back filling the trench with jumbled collapse materials, making the cut impossible to find.

2018-07-10 Marzuolo Archaeologist

Part of collapse particularly rich in organic content (charcoal), creating black area between pise/daub layer (20027) and reddish brown collapse layer below (20037 = 20036). Continued under wall 20019 (abuts 20019 at NE corner, but this area was characterized by a greyish clay rather than true charcoal layer.) Relation to SUs 20036 and 20037 uncertain.
