Interpreted a possible surface under collapse 17042. Charcoal patches may relate to production in surface in pre-collapse phase. Covers tone accumulation 17122 but unclear how to interpret.

Unknown Date Unknown Author

This layer was first excavated on 10 July when we found a bronze shell and iron box. These were removed because of fear of looting. Near these we also found a row of stones and a selection of bones. Originally we thought this might have been a burial. Row of stones later discovered to be part of wall 17118. Some early speculation that the central area of this layer which was less patchy and had a lot of charcoal was actually a medieval cut in the collapse layers above it because of the possibility of the shell being a pilgrimage item. Layer partially excavated on July 20 - no materials. Returned to layer on last day of excavation and extended its limits.
