Cleaning layer under top soil 17000 and over interface 17167

2017-06-30 Marzuolo Archaeologist

Cleaning layer. Approximately 5cm taken off after ruspa. In the south-southeast ruspa came down on previously excavated RPP 10000, exposing the stone pier (RPP SU 10060); RPP area roped off and not excavated. Evidence for firing activity in SE corner prompted an extension in the SE. Removal of cleaning layer revealed patches of red soil and possible kiln structures, opus reticulatum wall (SU 17018) running W-E the length of area, with at least two N-S walls adjoining, and two more N-S walls (SUs 17002, 17012) possibly adjoining in the SE extension (may extend trench to further ascertain relation?). Three quads mapped out as promising: Northwest (NW) quad is interior room of opus ret. structure with tile feature and pottery and bronze inclusions; South-central (SC) quad is possible kiln structure (SU 17016) with central pillar(?) (SU 17003) covered by soil (SU 17004) and stone/tile/mortar layer (SU 17005); Southeast (SE) quad shows at least two kiln structures abutting walls ending in piers similar to SU 10060, charcoal patch, and rubble layer.
