Possible stain on floor of workshop representing the location of a pile of charcoal used as fuel in a nearby forge. Charcoal sometimes stored in shallow pits or even just in heaps on the floor of workshops within easy access to the forge. The charcoal stains the soil underneath.

2019-07-16 Rhodora Vennarucci

Charcoal lends from natural (?) firing event or a single-use hearth (?) on surface of interface (17201). Similar lens visible at N extent of trench, the continuation of a charcoal concentration recorded and excavated jus to the N of our trench in 2017.
