Hammerscale fills shallow depression in 17191 where anvil block (likely wood) was probably located. Could the two lens (17194 and 17178 above) represent two phases of work in the same location? Or 17178 is just the more dispersed top of the lens?

2019-07-16 Marzuolo Archaeologist

Small concentration of hammerscale covering 17191 continued slightly under 17190, but most likely abuts the stone surface.

2019-07-16 Rhodora Vennarucci

Probably remnant of 17178, lens of hammerscale removed in same area; we can equalize the two SUs. Evidence of activity area where blacksmith was hammering metal objects on an anvil. The forge is located nearby.
