Hammerscale fills shallow depression in 17191 where anvil block (likely wood) was probably installed. If a shallow depression was dug against the portico's pavement (no clear cut identifiable), this may explain why hammerscale extends underneath the first stones of the pavement. The lens definitely does not extend more than a couple centimeneters beneath the paving stones.

Lens of hammerscale in entrance to workshop indicates an activity area where blacksmith hammered metal objects on an anvil; forge would be nearby.
